Three police officers were killed and two others wounded in a shooting Wednesday in York County, Pennsylvania, while attempting to serve a warrant at a residence in North Codorus Township. The suspect was later found dead inside the home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Pennsylvania community shaken by police shooting
Police operation in Pennsylvania ends with multiple officers shot and confirmed dead.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. local time, when members of the Northern York County Regional Police Department and the York County Sheriff’s Office arrived at a private residence near the intersection of Hoff Road and Greenbriar Road to execute a warrant. Shortly after approaching the property, the officers came under heavy gunfire.

Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that three officers were fatally shot at the scene. Two additional officers sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to WellSpan York Hospital, where they remained in serious but stable condition as of Wednesday evening. Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies responded to the active shooter situation, which lasted for several hours.

The residence was secured by tactical teams following an extended standoff. Authorities later discovered the deceased suspect inside the home. No additional injuries were reported among law enforcement or civilians in the surrounding area. The FBI has launched an investigation into the shooting, supporting the Pennsylvania State Police and York County authorities in collecting evidence and reconstructing the sequence of events.

    Pennsylvania governor issues state response

Officials confirmed that the officers were performing standard warrant service procedures when the shooting erupted, but no further operational details have been released. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro ordered flags across the state to be flown at half-staff in honor of the fallen officers. In a public statement, he called the attack “a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement.”

Governor Shapiro traveled to York County Wednesday evening to meet with officials and express condolences to the families of the victims. Attorney General Dave Sunday and York County District Attorney David Sunday both issued statements acknowledging the bravery of the officers involved and affirmed their agencies’ full cooperation with the investigation.

Local authorities have not disclosed the identity of the suspect or the specific nature of the warrant being served. Schools in the area were placed under temporary lockdown during the incident, and roads surrounding the neighborhood were closed to traffic for several hours. Law enforcement officials confirmed that there was no threat to the public following the resolution of the incident and that all shelter-in-place orders were lifted by the early evening.

Law enforcement agencies unite in response

Wednesday’s shooting represents one of the most deadly attacks on law enforcement personnel in Pennsylvania in recent years. The Northern York County Regional Police Department has not yet released the names of the deceased officers, pending notification of next of kin. The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities stated that updates will be provided once preliminary findings have been reviewed and formally documented.

Autopsies of the victims and the suspect are scheduled, and evidence collected at the scene will undergo forensic analysis. Officials have requested that the public refrain from speculation while investigators work to determine all relevant facts. Law enforcement presence will remain in the area over the coming days as the inquiry continues. – By Content Syndication Services.
